State funds for Howard park delayed |
| September 23, 2004 -- Howard County MD |
| Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., State
Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and State Treasurer Nancy K.
Kopp postponed the vote while their staffs investigate opposition to three
lighted athletic fields and the overall size and scope of the park. Approval
of a $534,114 installment on the project needed to build five athletic
fields, roadways and parking lots at the Glenwood park has been delayed
pending the outcome of the neighbors objections
Warren E. Miller, a western county Republican lawmaker said he wasn't in
office when the county approved the plans, but added that the county has run
roughshod over local objections to the park. There's a huge amount of
outrage in Glenwood." Joan M. Becker, a park neighbor attacked the concept
of the park, saying that her three children play sports and have enough
fields in other places to use. "What began in 1994 as a simple park has now
turned into a
sports complex," she said. |
