MINUTES FOR A REGULAR MEETING OF

JUNE 11, 2001

Mindy Hartstein, Big Bear Lake: discussed the negative impact that a sports field would have on property owners, if it is constructed in the China Gardens area.

Judi Hunter, Big Bear Lake: spoke on behalf of Help Expanded Recreational Opportunities (H.E.R.O.), and discussed the need for additional recreational facilities throughout the Valley.

Don Donner, Big Bear Lake: stated that he is not opposed to a sports complex but is opposed to the suggested location at China Gardens.

John Stock, Big Bear Lake: discussed the need for additional recreational facilities.  

Curtis Bryant, Big Bear Lake: discussed that the Valley needs additional recreational facilities, but not in the China Gardens area.   

Robert Long, Sugarloaf: spoke in opposition to a recreational facility constructed in a residential area, and stated that a swimming pool should be built at the high school to be used by the schools and the public. 

Mary Roberts, Big Bear City: discussed the need for a public swimming pool, but was against the idea of a sports complex.

John Stavish, Big Bear Lake: spoke in opposition to a sports complex built in a residential area.

Rudy Badillo, Big Bear Lake: stated that he was against the construction of any type of a sports facility because he moved here for peace and quiet.

Ed Caliendo, Big Bear Lake: urged the City to get all the facts before making a decision on where the sports complex should be built.  He felt that the sewer ponds should not be used for anything but for sewage overflow.

Mary Dobis, Big Bear Lake: spoke in favor of the project.

Jim Appleton, Big Bear Lake: spoke in opposition to a sports complex in the China Gardens area.  He stated that studies that were done years ago support the need for additional facilities, but they need to be in the right location.

Ben Jones, Big Bear Lake: stated that he is on the Recreation and Park Advisory Board and is an advocate for playing fields.  He reported that if it is found that the China Gardens area is not the right location for a sports field, then the Board is open to looking at other areas.

Nicol Richmond Loose, Big Bear Lake: discussed the need for a new sports complex.

Susie Sandstrom, Big Bear Lake: stated that the City needs to support a new sports complex, but it would be premature to rule out the China Gardens area until the necessary studies have been done.

Cassy Benson, Chairman of H.E.R.O.: reported that there is no longer any room at the schools for recreational facilities, and asked the Council to not rule out the China Gardens area until all of the facts are in.

Steve Lopez: discussed the need for additional recreational facilities in our Valley.

Anita Swigart, Big Bear Lake: discussed the need for additional sports facilities because of the increase in the Valleys population.

Tom Covey, Big Bear City: stated that he is not against recreational facilities in  China Gardens, but urged the Council to be cautious of the area until the environmental studies have been done.

Laura Koepke: spoke in opposition to a sports facility because of the impact it would have on the nearby residents.

Dennis Bracken, Real Estate Board of Big Bear Valley: stated that the Realtors are not opposed to the project, but are opposed to the location due to potential health hazards and property values.

Sandy Acosta, Big Bear Lake: stated that the real issue is not whether we need  additional recreational facilities, but the location and the need to do it  right.
